To make butter you need a jar, cream and a marble. You put the cream and the marble in the jar and shake! A lot!
Once we had made the butter we thought the best thing to do was make fairy bread. Yum!

For the last few weeks we have been looking at a few of the types of trees at our school. We looked at what they dropped on the ground and then compared how the leaves and seeds were different. You may have even had a few acorns and chestnuts turn up at home in pockets! On Tuesday we did an oak tree hunt around school to see how many we could find. We had to look at the leaf shape and around for acorns before we decided it was an oak tree. We found 7 in total. Maybe next time you are at school your child could point out all the oak trees we found! For art we have been learning about collage. We ripped and cut up pieces of paper and made some autumn trees. Some students choose to have summer trees, some in the middle of changing to autumn and some show the change happening with one side summer and the other autumn! We have also been learning how to write information reports to help us share all the facts we have been learning about trees. Here are a few examples of what we have written...
The chestnut tree leaves are prickly. By Luciana The chestnut trees are big. By Sam On the chestnut tree is a nest. Birds like to live in it. By Katrina In autumn the leaves fall down on the ground. By Ari Acorns are sharp at the bottom. By Ollie Every Friday afternoon we have our visit to the library. Jen comes in to help us and we are learning about how books are organised and how to act in the quiet space. Every Friday we join with the other classes in year 1 to do singing with Mrs Sutherland and then discovery. The children take the lead in ideas of what they would like to do for discovery. So far we have had construction, painting, making Anzac biscuits, ball games, dressing up and sand pit to names just a few! We gathered with the year 2 students in the hall for a special surprise. All the students got very excited when Ronald McDonald came out. He came to talk to us about road safety and how we can walk to school safely. We also helped him find his lost sock (it was on his back!) We also learnt the Make It Click song for being in the car. Here is a video about it. This term our inquiry topic is 'Our Big Outdoor Playground'. To get the children into the topic we went to the Christchurch Botanical Gardens to learn about the plants and wildlife there. We had a great day with Room 6 out under the tree learning about the birds and trying to find bugs. Our amazing parent helpers even dressed up as trees and we learnt why it's important to replant trees when we cut them down so the bugs and birds have somewhere to live. 6 students from Room 7 went to the gardens the day before most of the class. The weather may not have been the best but they had a great time looking at all the different and strange plants they had and also dressing up and learning why it's important to look after trees. We had our Easter Hunt on the final day of school. Our buddies from Room 22 helped us as we worked out all the clues to find the easter baskets. The Easter bunny even made an appearance. Happy Easter everyone! With all the cricket and Black Cap news that was happening at the end of the term we joined with Room 6 to learn some of the fundamental skills of the game and enjoy playing ourselves.
Anzac Day is coming up in Term 2 and we are going to grow some poppy plants in Room 7. But before we grew them we thought as a class what seeds need to grow. The students thought that seeds need: -water -sun -soil To see if what we thought was right we put some seeds onto a plate with paper towels and changed what we were doing with each one. One plate we didn't water, one plate we put in a cupboard so it didn't get any sun and one in the sun with water. We also planted some seeds in soil to compare. After 2 weeks we checked in how the seeds were growing. We noticed that -the seeds with no water had not done anything -the seeds in the cupboard had tried to grow but were small and not green -the seeds with water and sun had grown well -the seeds in the soil with water and sun grew the best no sun sun and water no water Now that we knew the best way to grow seeds we planted our own pots. Watch this space to see how they grow... |
